What Is Depression?

Depression isn’t just sadness. It’s a real, diagnosable medical condition that affects how you think, feel, sleep, and function day to day. Some people feel numb. Others feel weighed down by sadness, irritability, or hopelessness. And for many, it’s not obvious what’s wrong, just that things feel off.

Depression is diagnosed when someone experiences low mood or loss of interest, along with other symptoms like poor sleep, fatigue, guilt, appetite changes, or difficulty concentrating - for at least two weeks or more.

You don’t need to hit “rock bottom” to get help. Even mild to moderate depression can affect your brain, body, and relationships.

Depression is treatable. With the right support and tools, your brain can change, and so can your life.

Why Trust Me?

You deserve a therapist who’s not just warm and supportive, but one who knows what works.

I’m a registered psychologist with years of experience helping people move through depression using proven, evidence-based approaches. In sessions, I don’t just listen, I guide you through a structured process that’s tailored to your goals.

Step 1: Assess & Map

We start by understanding what you're facing:

  • A 60-minute intake session to explore symptoms, triggers, life context, and goals

  • Use of validated measures like the PHQ-9 to track mood

  • Map out the factors maintaining your depression - thought patterns, behaviour cycles, past experiences

📌 Goal: Clarity on what’s happening and what needs to change

Step 2: Targeted Treatment

Here’s where the real work happens. We:

  • Use evidence-based approaches like CBT, EMDR, ACT, or self-compassion-based therapy

  • Target specific patterns (e.g. rumination, avoidance, low motivation)

  • Focus on values-based behaviour, emotional processing, and building healthy routines

📌 Goal: Reduce depressive symptoms, increase energy, reconnect with what matters

Step 3: Sustain & Prevent Relapse

We consolidate what’s working and build relapse-prevention tools:

  • Identify early warning signs and stressors

  • Create a personalised self-care plan (your “anti-depression toolkit”)

  • Optional check-in sessions as needed

📌 Goal: Stay well and keep moving forward even when life gets hard

Many clients start to feel small shifts within 2–3 sessions and more significant change between 6–12.

Frequently asked questions

1. Do I need a GP referral to get started?

No—anyone can book in directly. However, a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP will give you a $96.65 Medicare rebate per session for up to 10 sessions per year.

2. How long will therapy take to work?
Everyone’s journey is different, but many people see improvement in 6–12 sessions. We’ll review progress together every few sessions using simple tools like the PHQ-9 to make sure therapy is helping.

3. What if I’ve tried therapy before and it didn’t work?

That’s common and often, it’s because the approach didn’t match your needs. We’ll start by understanding what wasn’t helpful, and then tailor a method (like EMDR or ACT) that fits better. Therapy should never feel like a dead-end.

5. What if my depression is tied to something deeper—like trauma or self-worth issues?

We can absolutely work on that. Approaches like EMDR and parts work help people heal from experiences that shaped their beliefs about themselves. We don’t just treat the symptoms, we look at the whole picture.

How can I contact you?

4. Can I do this if I’m feeling really flat or unmotivated?

Yes. We go at your pace. Depression often robs people of energy and drive—we can work with that, starting with small, achievable steps that build momentum over time.mselves. We don’t just treat the symptoms—we look at the whole picture.
